FACE #6

Partner Physician,

CNY Family Care

What was your path/journey after you graduated from Cornell?

After graduation I attended medical school at SUNY at Buffalo, followed by a Family Medicine Residency and Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, St. Margaret Hospital. My first attending position was at the Lynn Community Center on the North Shore of Boston, and after a few years moved back home to Syracuse.

I am now a partner at CNY Family Care, a private practice in East Syracuse, NY. I have been with the practice since 2006. I have mostly been practicing clinically, but also co-authored an article (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15541227/) on the prevention of traveler's diarrhea with bismuth subsalicylate.

I am married with a 12 year old boy and three dogs! I met my husband through mutual friends in Boston. He owns a contracting business and property management company. My son is busy completing his black belt cycle in karate, playing trumpet in the jazz band, and playing various random sports.

My family enjoys camping and hiking, and I have made some trips back to Ithaca, where I have enjoyed concerts and the falls without a prelim hanging over me! I am an unapologetic fan of Central NY life, for example, a lifetime member of the Beaver Lake Nature Center, a local treasure that reminds me of my time in Bio 101.

Back in my hometown, I have had the opportunity to reconnect with some high school friends: We formed a “book club” of six women - we like to call ourselves the Social Society of Part-Time Readers.

I also participate in a charitable organization called 100 Women Who Care, a "Shark Tank" for local charities.  Three organizations present their programs and each woman writes a $100 check to the winner, but we will often contribute to the other two - it is quite enlightening and absolutely fulfilling.

Finally, I am a member of a local Filipino American Association and participate in cultural events and find camaraderie. It is a welcome tie to the country my parents left when I was an infant.

I recently became involved with Class of ’95 alumni matters, participating in meetings with officers and Class Council, working to expand social media. I have been so grateful for the efforts they all have contributed over the years.

If you could change anything about your Cornell experience, what would it be and why?

I wish I could have spent some summers at Cornell! I have a brother who is ten years younger, so I wanted to be home with him each summer, but I just always wondered how the campus experience would have been outside the school year.

Which Cornell classmates do you keep in contact with?

Phong Diep, Yoko Tsukikawa, Brad Aufderheide, Sandy Chin, Amy Riolo. I went to med school with Amy Weinstein, Molly Harrington and Oren Fix. And I keep in contact with others on social media but not in person!

What does being a Cornell alumnus mean to you?

I take pride in being part of such a renowned institution with such diverse courses of study in which each person can have a taste of what each college has to offer.
